PRESS RELEASE issued on 5 February 2007
REPORT ON THE WORK AND ACTIVITIES OF THE NATIONAL AUDIT OFFICE 2006
The Auditor General presented to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Anton Tabone, the annual report on the Work and Activities of the National Audit Office (NAO) for the year 2006
The report defines the Constitutional legal background to the establishment of the NAO, and describes the organisational set up and the different types of audits carried out. These include Financial and Compliance Audits, Performance Audits and Special Audits.
NAO relations with two Standing Parliamentary Committees of the House of Representatives, namely the Public Accounts Committee and the National Audit Office Accounts Committee, are given due prominence in the report. The Public Accounts Committee considers and examines reports submitted by the Auditor General. The National Audit Office Accounts Committee examines the NAO estimates and accounts.
Reference in the report is made to the Code of Ethics and other Office Guidelines followed by audit examiners. An overview of the core organisation structure of the NAO, as well as developments relating to IT, staff recruitment and mobility, qualifications, and training activities are also described
NAO relations with overseas Supreme Audit Institutions and other organisations, which took place during the year, are covered in some detail. The report enlists local and overseas events attended by NAO to further enhance the professional competencies of its employees, and provides a brief overview of NAO’s contribution to international papers and participation in foreign Committees.
The report concludes with an overview on recent and current developments by the NAO.
This is the last Annual Report on the Work and Activities of the NAO by Mr Joseph G. Galea as his second and final term as Auditor General comes to an end in July 2007.
